RÉSIDENCE INTERNATIONALE 2024 – AGATOAK RONNY KOWSPI ET ROBIN CHIPHOWKA KOWSPI

Depuis le 6 février 2024, l’association Françoise, en partenariat avec l’Institut Français, accueille les frères Agatoak Ronny Kowspi et Robin Chiphowka Kospi en résidence artistique à la Cité Internationale des arts de Paris pour une durée de deux mois. Venus de Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée, les deux artistes se sont installés en plein cœur de Paris, dans le Marais. 

La génèse du projet 

La  volonté  d’accueillir  à  nouveau  ces  artistes  en  France remonte à juillet 2018. Les  collectionneurs Hervé Francès et Estelle Francès – fondatrice de Françoise – ont eu  l’opportunité  d’échanger  avec  Raymond  Kowspi  MAREK  et  ses  deux  fils  lors  d’un  voyage  à Ambunti. Cette rencontre, aussi inattendue que mémorable, motive depuis le projet. 

Après de longs échanges, de nombreux périples administratifs et autres difficultés avec l’administration locale, la résidence se concrétise enfin. Nos recherches ont provoqué de riches découvertes qui renforçaient notre engagement et notre souhait d’accomplir ce programme.

Rappelons ici le pouvoir des rencontres. En effet, en 2002, au cœur de la forêt du Haut-Sepik en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, l’écrivain et philosophe Maxime Rovere entre en contact avec le chef d’un clan du peuple Kwoma, Raymond Kowspi MAREK. Face à la crainte de l’extinction culturelle, l’écrivain, Raymond, et ses fils – Agatoak Ronny KOWSPI et Robin Chiphowka KOWSPI – collaborent pour transcrire les mythes Kwoma et les illustrer.

Cette collaboration aboutit à une première résidence des artistes à Paris, en 2008, et à une exposition au Musée du Quai Branly « Rouge Kwoma. Peintures mythiques de Nouvelle-Guinée » du 14 octobre 2008 au 4 janvier 2009. La commissaire de l’exposition est Magali Melandri, accompagnée de Maxime Rovere.

Les artistes et leurs démarches

Raymond Kowspi MAREK et ses fils Agatoak Ronny KOWSPI et Robin Chiphowka KOWSPI vivent et travaillent à Ambunti en Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée. Ils font partie de la communauté Kwoma – située dans la province du Sépik oriental – et plus particulièrement du clan Wanyi. 

La culture Kwoma trouve son expression notamment dans les mythes, des numas, transmis par voie orale et mais aussi à travers des pangal, des peintures traditionnelles réalisées sur l’enveloppe fibreuse de palmiers.

Les œuvres contemporaines de Raymond Kowspi Marek, d’Agatoak Ronny Kowspi et Robin Chiphowka Kowspi portent l’empreinte de ce profond enracinement dans la culture ancestrale. Au moyen de la peinture acrylique, de la sculpture ou de la peinture sur écorce, chacun des artistes s’efforce de conserver et diffuser les traditions et mythes de son clan, revisitant les motifs et récits qui lui sont propres.

Agatoak, Robin et leur père, Raymond, ont à cœur de partager leurs traditions avec la scène artistique contemporaine française, aspirant à confronter leurs réflexions à des sociétés en perpétuel mouvement.

Cette démarche artistique vise à établir un dialogue entre les racines culturelles profondes des Kwoma et les défis de la modernité, avec notamment une réflexion portée par Agatoak Ronny Kowspi sur la perte des liens avec la nature.

La programmation

Du 6 février au 4 avril 2024, Agatoak Ronny KOWSPI et Robin Chiphowka KOWSPI, sont accueillis à la Cité Internationale des arts de Paris pour mener des recherches sur leurs pratiques et participer à une programmation variée. L’âge et l’état de santé de Raymond Kowspi MAREK ne permet plus de l’accueillir à Paris, mais il prend part au projet par les échanges avec ses fils, nos pensées et toute la transmission qu’offrent ses œuvres.

 Depuis plusieurs mois, Françoise conserve et documente un fond de plus de 120 œuvres réalisées lors de la précédente résidence des artistes en 2008. Elle présentera ces œuvres à la fondation Francès à Senlis et à Clichy, au sein d’expositions-évènements qui ouvriront leurs portes au public le vendredi 23 février.

 Ces expositions sont pensées comme des espaces de recherche et d’expérimentation, ponctués de temps de rencontre et de dialogue avec les artistes en résidence.

En parallèle, Agatoak et Robin seront invités à prendre part à des workshops avec des étudiants des Beaux-Arts, notamment l’atelier de Romain Bernini, des artistes Françoise comme Stéphanie Mansy, Clément Borderie ou encore Myriam Mechita. 

À cela s’ajoutent, des open studios – des visites d’atelier – mais aussi des conversations et des conférences dans des institutions partenaires, à Paris et en région.

International residency 2024 – Agatoak Ronny Kowspi and Robin Chiphowka Kowspi

Since the 6th of February, the Françoise association, in partnership with the Institut Francais, welcomes the brothers Agatoak Ronny Kowspi and Robin Chiphowka Kowspi in an artistic residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts of Paris. The residency will last two months. Coming from Papua New Guinea, the two artists are now hosted in the heart of Paris, in the Marais district. 

The origins of the project

The desire to invite again these artists to France originated in July 2018. The collectionists Hervé Francès and Estelle Francès – founder of Francoise – had the opportunity to exchange with Raymond Kowspi Marek and his two sons during a trip to Ambunti. This encounter, unexpected and memorable, has motivated since then the project. 

After exchanges, some administrative complications and other difficulties with the local authorities, the residency is finally achieved. Our research resulted in valuable discoveries that reinforced our commitment and our desire to accomplish this program. 

The power of encounters deserves to be remembered. Indeed, in 2002, in the heart of the forest of Haut-Sepik in Papua New Guinea, the writer and philosopher Maxime Rovere comes into contact with the chief of one clan of Kwoma people, Raymond Kowspi Marek. To fight the fear of cultural extinction, the writer, Raymond, and their sons, Agatoak Ronny Kowspi and Robin Chiphowka Kowspi, cooperated to transcribe and illustrate the traditional Kwoma myths. 

This collaboration led to the first residency of the two artists in France (Paris) in 2008, along with an exhibition at the Musée du Quai Branly, “Rouge Kwoma. Peintures mythiques de Nouvelle-Guinée”, from the 14th of October 2008 to the 4th of January 2009. The curator was Magali Melandri, together with Maxime Rovere. 

The artists and their approach

Raymond Kowspi Marek and his sons Agatoak Ronny Kowspi and Robin Chiphowka Kowspi live and work in Ambunti, Papua New Guinea. They are part of the Kwoma community, situated in the eastern province of Sepik; in particular, they are members of the Wanyi clan. 

The Kwoma culture finds its expression in the myths, the numas, orally transmitted across generations through some pangal, traditional paintings realised on the fibrous husk of palm trees.

The contemporary works of Raymond Kowspi Marek, Agatoak Ronny Kowspi and Robin Chiphowka Kowspi are influenced by these profound roots in ancestral culture. Through the use of acrylic painting, sculpture or painting on barks, each artist is committed to preserving and diffusing the traditions and the myths of his own clan, revisiting its motifs and stories. 

Agatoak, Robin and their father Raymond desire to share their traditions with the contemporary artistic French scene, aiming to confront their reflections on societies in ongoing movement. 

This artistic approach aims to establish a dialogue with the deep cultural roots of the Kwoma people and the modern challenges, in particular through a reflection carried by Agatoak regarding the loss of connections with nature. 

The programmation

From the 6th of February to the 4th of April 2024, Agatoak Ronny Kowspi and Robin Chiphowka Kowspi, will be welcomed at the Cité Internationale des arts of Paris to research their artistic practices and participate to a diversified collateral program. The age and the state of health of Raymond Kowspi Marek didn’t allow him to travel to Paris, but he takes part to the project through the exchanges with his sons, our thoughts and the transmission offered by his artworks. 

For several months, Françoise has been preserving and documenting a collection of more than 120 works conceived during the previous residency of the artists in 2008. The association will present these artworks at the Fondation Francès in Senlis and Clichy, during some exhibitions-event that will open to the public on the 23rd of February.

These exhibitions are thought as spaces of research and experimentation, punctuated by moments of encounters and dialogues with the artists in residency. 

In parallel, Agatoak and Robin will be invited to take part in workshops with some students of the School of Fine Arts in Paris, in particular the atelier of Romain Bernini, some artists of the platform Françoise, as Stéphanie Mansy, Clément Borderie or again Myriam Mechita. 

Moreover, some open studios will take place, as well as conversations and conferences in partner institutions, in Paris and its region.
