ROYAL CANIN® PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD 2023 | LES LAURÉATS

En 2023, l’engagement de ROYAL CANIN® dans le monde des arts s’affirme avec la création du Royal Canin Photography Award (RCPA). Ce concours invite des artistes internationaux diplômés des écoles supérieures d’art, de design et de photographie à célébrer le caractère unique des chats et des chiens.

À l’occasion de la remise des prix et du vernissage du Royal Canin Photography Award (RCPA), les 5 finalistes du concours ont été conviés au siège international de Royal Canin. Le duo Sand of Noises composé de Marie Hervé et Elsa Martinez, Geoffroy Mathieu, Bérénice Nouvel et Mathieu Roquigny ont présentés leurs quatre séries exposées dans l’espace dédié au siège (plus de 30 œuvres exposées).

Ce prix international est l’occasion de témoigner de l’engagement des artistes à changer la perception du public sur les chats et les chiens qui partagent notre quotidien. Le thème du concours devait mettre en avant les 4 dimensions de la santé obsessionnelle de Royal Canin : la santé physique, mentale, sociale et environnementale des chats et des chiens.

La sélection s’est opérée à l’aide d’un jury composé de cinq experts de la photographie et de la création contemporaine :

Premier prix ROYAL CANIN® Photography Award (RCPA) : duo Sand of Noises composé de Marie Hervé et Elsa Martinez pour leur série intitulée Aura.

Marie Hervé et Elsa Martinez travaillent en duo depuis 2020. À travers leur série Aura, elles ont opté pour le parti pris d’une série de photographies travaillant l’image par couches de couleurs et irradiations lumineuses, faisant écho au chat comme animal sacré et figure symbolique. Le chat serait doté de ce sixième sens télépathique, capable de communication profonde avec son maître, et détectant des éléments auxquels l’humain n’aurait pas accès – changement d’énergies, dangers, infimes mouvements et vibrations … Il incarne la déesse Bastet, protectrice du foyer, de la maternité et symbole de la chaleur du soleil. Devenant totem, corps iridescent aussi bien en noir et blanc qu’en couleur, l’aura du chat laisse sa trace et s’imprime à même la surface de l’image. Il rappelle aussi ces relations possibles, ces communications sensibles entre les êtres humains et l’animal et leurs interactions.

Deuxième prix ROYAL CANIN® Photography Award (RCPA) : Geoffroy Mathieu pour sa série intitulée Royal Bourbon issue de la grande commande nationale « Radioscopie de la France : regards sur un pays traversé par la crise sanitaire, » financée par le Ministère de la culture et pilotée par la BNF.

Dans sa quête de compréhension des modes d’habitation du monde, Geoffroy Mathieu oriente aujourd’hui ses recherches vers la représentation d’expériences humaines ou animales déplaçant nos rapports au vivant. Qu’elles émanent de commandes de collectivités ou d’institutions, de résidences ou d’initiatives personnelles, ses séries sont menées comme des enquêtes poétiques. L’errance canine est un phénomène massif à La Réunion : pour près de 80 000 chiens la « vraie vie » se passe dans la rue, dans les ports, sur les plages, les ronds-points ou dans la forêt. Geoffroy Mathieu est allé à la rencontre de ces chiens qui vivent, seuls, en groupe ou en meute, aux côtés des Réunionnais, en ville ou dans les espaces périurbains et ruraux. Il les a suivis dans leurs parcours quotidiens et a appris à les connaître.

Cette première édition du Royal Canin Photographie Award (RCPA) récompense la créativité et l’engagement des photographies :

Le premier prix RCPA récompense la performance artistique et créative de la série Aura. Le Duo Sand of Noises bénéficiera d’une dotation de 10 000 euros, de la production d’une exposition collective itinérante mais aussi d’une présentation unique à l’AKC Museum of the Dogs à Manhattan, New-York (de novembre 2023 à février 2024).

Le deuxième prix RCPA récompense l’engagement artistique pour la cause animale en adéquation avec les valeurs fondatrices de Royal Canin : la santé et le bien être des chats et des chiens dans le monde. Geoffroy Mathieu bénéficiera d’une dotation de 5 000 euros et de la production d’une exposition collective itinérante.

In 2023, ROYAL CANIN®’s commitment to the art world is further asserted with the creation of the Royal Canin Photography Award (RCPA). This competition invites international artists who have graduated from art, design and photography schools to celebrate the uniqueness of cats and dogs.

For the Royal Canin Photography Award (RCPA) award ceremony and vernissage, the 5 finalists were invited to Royal Canin’s international headquarters. The Sand of Noises duo composed of Marie Hervé and Elsa Martinez, Geoffroy Mathieu, Bérénice Nouvel and Mathieu Roquigny presented their four series exhibited in the dedicated space at headquarters (over 30 works on display).

This international award is an opportunity to demonstrate artists’ commitment to change the public’s perception of cats and dogs that share our daily lives. The competition theme was intended to highlight the 4 dimensions of Royal Canin’s obsessive health: the physical, mental, social and environmental health of cats and dogs.

The selection was made by a jury of five experts in the fields of photography and contemporary art:

1st prize – ROYAL CANIN® Photography Award (RCPA) goes to the Sand of Noises duo Marie Hervé and Elsa Martinez for their series entitled Aura.

Marie Hervé and Elsa Martinez have been working as a duo since 2020. With their Aura series, they have opted for a series of photographs that use layers of color and luminous irradiation, echoing the cat as a sacred animal and symbolic figure. The cat is said to be endowed with a telepathic sixth sense, capable of profound communication with its master, and detecting elements to which humans have no access – changing energies, dangers, minute movements and vibrations… It embodies the goddess Bastet, protector of the home, maternity and symbol of the sun’s warmth. Becoming a totem, an iridescent body in both black & white and color, the cat’s aura leaves its mark and imprints itself on the very surface of the image. It is also a reminder of the possible relationships, the sensitive communications and interactions between human beings and animals.

The 2nd prize – ROYAL CANIN® Photography Award (RCPA) goes to Geoffroy Mathieu for his series entitled Royal Bourbon, part of the major national commission « Radioscopie de la France: regards sur un pays traversé par la crise sanitaire ».

In his quest to understand the ways in which the world is inhabited, Geoffroy Mathieu’s research today focuses on the representation of human or animal experiences that displace our relationship with the living. Whether commissioned by local authorities or institutions, in residency or on his own initiative, his series are conducted as poetic investigations. Dog wandering is a massive phenomenon on Reunion Island: for almost 80,000 dogs, « real life » takes place in the street, in ports, on beaches, traffic circles or in the forest. Geoffroy Mathieu went to meet these dogs who live, alone, in groups or in packs, alongside the people of La Réunion, in towns, suburbs and rural areas. He followed them on their daily journeys and got to know them better.

This first edition of the Royal Canin Photography Award (RCPA) rewards creativity and commitment in photography:

The RCPA’s first prize recognizes the artistic and creative performance of the Aura series. The Sand of Noises Duo will receive an endowment of 10,000 euros, the production of a traveling group exhibition and a one-off presentation at the AKC Museum of the Dogs in Manhattan, New York (November 2023 to February 2024).

The second RCPA prize rewards artistic commitment to the animal cause, in line with Royal Canin’s founding values: the health and well-being of cats and dogs worldwide. Geoffroy Mathieu will receive 5,000 euros and the production of a traveling collective exhibition.
