RÉSIDENCE INTERNATIONALE 2024 – SOL MIRAGLIA : l’importance des archives

Dans le cadre du programme de résidences internationales, l’association Françoise a le plaisir d’accueillir du 10 avril au 4 juillet 2024, à la Cité Internationale des Arts de Paris, en partenariat avec l’Institut Français, l’artiste argentine Sol Miraglia pour son projet ‘Unforgettable Nights: Ricardo Martínez Paz Archive’.

Le projet de résidence de Sol Miraglia a commencé par une rencontre avec Ricardo Martinez Paz l’année dernière, à Paris. Ricardo Martinez Paz est un performer, styliste de mode et photographe originaire de Coronel Pringles, en Argentine. Il vit à Paris depuis 45 ans. Dans les années 1980, il a été correspondant pour LIB, un magazine de Barcelone, où il avait une chronique intitulée « De Paris ». Il a témoigné et documenté les lieux de la nuit et du spectacle, et le travail de décennies a abouti à une archive qu’il détient dans son appartement et qui compte aujourd’hui plus de 20 000 diapositives photo et 1000 polaroids.

Sol Miraglia travaille depuis plus d’une décennie avec des photographes et leurs archives. Travaillant sur des supports photographiques et filmiques, elle explore les tensions émotionnelles et épistémologiques entre les individus, leur production créative et leurs archives. Ses projets se concentrent souvent sur le travail d’artistes plus âgés dont les œuvres ont été perdues de vue ou de faveur, et sur des espaces qui ont été figés dans le temps, soit dans l’intérêt de la préservation, soit par négligence.

Après de nombreux échanges avec Ricardo Martinez Paz dans son appartement, elle a décidé de plonger dans ses archives, de leur donner une nouvelle vie et de relire l’auteur lui-même. Sol s’engage à montrer le lien entre les souvenirs, les photographies d’archives et leur importance dans notre présent.

Durant sa résidence, Sol Miraglia entend donner à cette archive de nouvelles formes par le biais du film. Elle croit au pouvoir du film, qui permet l’émergence d’un nouveau langage et de nouveaux sens. Une partie de l’archive numérisée, des images, des interviews et des tournages d’aujourd’hui avec Ricardo se fondront ensemble pour enrichir cette archive et mettre en lumière de nouvelles représentations, mais aussi un nouveau regard sur le genre et les aspects populaires des nuits parisiennes avant le SIDA, à travers une recherche approfondie.

Avec le soutien de l’association Françoise et de l’Institut Français, Sol Miraglia revient en France pour documenter, enregistrer et réactiver les archives de toute une vie, au sein d’un projet qu’elle intitule Unforgettable Nights: Ricardo Martínez Paz Archive, un film sur lequel elle travaille avec Ricardo Martinez Paz lui-même.

As part of the International Residency Program, the Françoise association is pleased to welcome Argentine artist Sol Miraglia from April 10th to July 4th, 2024, at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, in partnership with the French Institute, for her project ‘Unforgettable Nights: Ricardo Martínez Paz Archive’.

Sol Miraglia’s residency project began with a meeting with Ricardo Martinez Paz last year in Paris. Ricardo Martinez Paz is a performer, fashion stylist, and photographer from Coronel Pringles, Argentina. He has been living in Paris for 45 years. In the 1980s, he was a correspondent for LIB, a magazine in Barcelona, with a column titled « From Paris ». He witnessed and documented nightlife and performances, and decades of work have resulted in an archive he holds in his apartment, which now contains over 20,000 photo slides and a thousand Polaroids.

Sol Miraglia has been working with photographers and their archives for over a decade. Working with photographic and film materials, she explores the emotional and epistemological tensions between individuals, their creative output, and their archives. Her projects often focus on the work of older artists whose works have fallen out of view or favour, and on spaces frozen in time, either in the interest of preservation or through neglect.

After numerous exchanges and spending a month with Ricardo Martinez Paz in his apartment, she decided to delve into these archives, giving them new life and reinterpreting the author himself. Sol is committed to showing the connection between memories, archive photographs, and their importance in our present.

Sol Miraglia aims to give this archive new formats during her residency by creating a film. She believes in the power of film, which allows for the emergence of a new language and new meanings. A portion of the digitized archive, images, interviews, and current footage with Ricardo will blend together to enrich this archive and shed light on new representations, as well as a new perspective on the gender and popular aspects of Parisian nights before AIDS, through in-depth research.

With the support of the Françoise association and the French Institute, Sol Miraglia returns to document, record, and reactivate a lifetime of archives within a project she titles Unforgettable Nights: Ricardo Martínez Paz Archive, a film on which she collaborates with Ricardo Martinez Paz himself.
